The date was calculated by Harold Camping, the leader of an independent Christian ministry called Family Radio Worldwide, which is based in Oakland, Calif. Camping's date is based on his interpretation of the bible. One such billboard is located off Interstate 30 near Cockrell Hill; another high-profile one is located off Interstate 35 in Dallas, with 16 others spread throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
But, the campaign isn't just on the side of the road, with supporters driving across country to spread the message. In 1992, Harold Camping, a syndicated television preacher operating out of Oakland, California, penned the following words: "The results of this study indicate that the month of September of the year 1994 is to be the time for the end of history." Some 3,500 years earlier, Moses wrote: "[W]hen a prophet speaks in the name of Jehovah, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which Jehovah has not spoken: the prophet has spoken it presumptuously, you need not be afraid of him" (Dt. 18:22).
